![]() ![]() 8 A combination of 12 earth system trends and 12 socio-economic indicators forms the “Planetary Dashboard,” depicting the “Great Acceleration” in human imprint from 1950 onward. In 2015, the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme reassessed and updated its “Planetary Dashboard,” first published in 2004. ![]() ![]() Climate change and biosphere integrity are “core boundaries,” as they can significantly drive the Earth System into a new state. 5, 6, 7 Four of these boundaries have now been crossed as a result of human activity: climate change, loss of biosphere integrity, land-system change, and altered biogeochemical cycles (phosphorus and nitrogen). The Planetary Boundaries concept describes 9 processes and systems based on the interactions between land, ocean, atmosphere, and life that regulate the stability and resilience of the Earth System. 1, 2, 3 Planet Earth will be conquered by the man with 10 billion inhabitants by 2050 and with a global human-made mass exceeding all living biomass. 1, 2 Although not yet accepted by all scientists, there is now overwhelming global evidence that human activity profoundly impacts atmospheric, geologic, hydrologic, biospheric, and other earth system processes. The Anthropocene is debated to be situated either after or within the Holocene, the current epoch, which began approximately 10,000 years ago with the end of the last glacial period. ![]() The Anthropocene Epoch is an unofficial unit of geologic time and is used to describe the most recent period in Earth’s history when human activity started to have a significant impact on the planet’s climate and ecosystems. ![]()
